Recursion

I'm creating digital and physical media that others can interact with to show the chaotic yet structured basis of 2D and 3D fractal design.

Algorithms are the code in nature. What happens when a person alters these set guidelines? Through fractals as a visual I'm looking into the relationship of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design to create something that others can interact with to show the chaotic yet structured basis of fractal design through mediums such as motion graphics and 3D printing. By showing a basic step by step process to generate a fractal I want others to take away an understanding of how they work, and to show a glimpse of how one might begin to create and alter their own.

Over the course of the spring semester I experimented and researched several areas involving fractals in nature. I learned a lot of information about fractal trees in plants and the human body, spirals and sutures from ammonite shells, stalagmites and stalactites in crystal formations, and genetic engineering in plants and the human body as a means of hacking nature.

What I hope to accomplish in the upcoming semester is to take all of my research and apply it to some greater meaning and perhaps go beyond fractals to create new content. What else can relate to it? Can people and society be fractals? Fractals are like the code in nature, and DNA is the code of people. Using this, I hope to expand on the idea of hacking nature. I would like to look into the relationship of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design to create something that others can interact with to show the chaotic yet structured basis of fractal design through mediums such as animation and 3D printing.

  1. I thought this would interest you. It's pretty amazing the water crystals that formed after each test that Masaru had done. If you go to the photo gallery it shows the water crystal that formed and under it is what he did to try to alter the crystals. The book goes further in depth into the history behind the cities where he had retrieved the water.
